The Fruit of Wisdom
One of the most beloved stories of Lord Murugan reveals the meaning of true wisdom.
Once, the sage Narada brought a divine golden fruit, the Gnana Pazham (Fruit of Wisdom), to Mount Kailash. He offered it to Lord Shiva but set a condition: it could not be cut or shared. Lord Shiva decided to award it to whichever of his two sons, Ganesha or Murugan, could circle the world three times and return first.
Lord Murugan, swift and energetic, immediately mounted his peacock and flew off to circle the globe. Meanwhile, Lord Ganesha, displaying his profound wisdom, simply walked around his parents, Shiva and Parvati, three times with great devotion.
When asked why, Ganesha replied, "My parents are my world." Pleased by this answer, Shiva gave him the fruit. When Murugan returned and saw this, he felt slighted and renounced his worldly possessions, moving to the south (Palani) to become an ascetic. This story teaches us that love and respect for one's parents is the highest form of wisdom.
